• Population of 600 residents
• Roughly 215 miles southeast of Freetown
• Majority live off the land as subsistence farmers, hunters and crafters
• Water well, school, community center and clinic are primary focal points of the village

Getting to SALEMA is an adventure in itself. After eleven years of war the roads are being repaired only now. The 215 mile trip from the city can easily take more than 12 hours. A trip however presents its own rewards. The green hills and mountains snaking across the route offer some of the most gorgeous and spectacular views of unspoilt rain forest, stretching out as far as the eye could see. This beautiful view and green scene, largely untouched by human activity, more than makes up for the minor inconveniences of the trip.
