The school is served by only three teachers. The children and teacher lack basic school materials (books, pens crayons) and sport equipments like soccer balls and hoops for (girls).
There are hardly any benches. Some parents cannot afford school uniforms for their children.
Most of the children go to school hungry.
Water Well (Bore Hole)
The current bore hole is the village’s only source of safe drinking water
It is heavily used also for cooking, laundry, and other household chores
Problems
It has no cover so debris from wind and dust end up in the hole
Over 15 meters deep which makes it a potential death trap for little children and women who are the main users
It is labor intensive to fetch the water both because of the depth and the manual nature of fetching the water
As such not surprising that children and population tend to suffer from a high degree of water borne diseases.
What needs to be done
The quality of the well water can be significantly increased by:
lining the well,
sealing the well head,
fitting a self-priming hand pump,
constructing an apron,
Providing 1% chlorine solution for periodic cleaning (every six months)
Clinic
SALEMA (and neighboring environs) is fortunate to have a clinic staffed by one nurse. For a ten mile radius it is the only access people have to a medical facility. Has a maternity ward and provides basic medical care for minor ailments such as headaches, minor cuts etc. Serious cases are referred to the hospital which is over 15 miles away. Many a sick person have perished due to lack of transportation and the prohibitive cost.
Community Center
The Community Center was destroyed in the war. Prior to the war it served as the social life line for the village and its environs.
Women and youth met there to discuss issues pertaining to them. It served as the venue for adult education classes as well as the venue for Social functions such as disco and traditional dances.
